The building was originally built as a small prayer house but was rebuilt and enlarged in 605 by Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malek and his son al-Walid. The earthquakes of 656 and 1033 completely destroyed the mosque and each time the mosque was rebuilt. The various dynasties of the Islamic Caliphate have added to the interior of the famous domes, cephalad, minbars, minarets, and mosques in and around the mosque. Jerusalem was occupied during the Crusades in 1099, and the mosque (al-Aqsa) was used as a palace unit. It was recaptured in 116 by the first Sultan of Egypt and Syria, Salahuddin. Reconstruction and the addition of the mosque were continued under the direction of the Sultan. Later, the Mamluk sultanate (Egypt, the Levant, and the Hejaz expanded), including Ayubid (Mulsim-Kurdish), the Ottoman Empire, the Supreme Muslim Council, and Jordan, many kings maintained their influence in the mosque.

Why Al-Aqsa Mosque is so important

Al-Aqsa Mosque is important in Islam because we (Muslims believe) Hazrat Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to pray back to this mosque until he prayed at the Kaaba. The Qur'an states that the Prophet was taken at night to the mosque [al-Aqsa], the farthest from the Holy Mosque [Makkah], from where he ascended to Paradise (called the Miraj). It was the second place of worship in Islam after the Kaaba and is mentioned numerous times in the Qur'an as a "holy" and "blessed" place. “Blessed is He [Allah] who took His servant from Al-Masjid Al-Haram to Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa at night, around which we prayed so that we could show him some of Our signs. Surely He is the Hearing, the Seeing. ‘Surah Isra' (1 17: 1). According to Islamic scriptures, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that one of the three most important mosques for Muslims is the Al-Haram Mosque in Mecca, the Al-Masjid An-Nawawi in Medina, and the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

Al-Aqsa is a place of comfort and hope

Every Ramadan, there are millions of Palestinians who suffer during holy month. In Gaza, 50% of the population does not have enough to eat, and hungry families fast all day without eating anything for iftar. The matter becomes even more painful when a severe shortage of water poisons the lives of thousands of families. Despite enduring so much sorrow, misery, and suffering, many Palestinians spend long nights at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, praying long nights, hoping for more rewards.

Who controls Al-Aqsa?

Israel occupied East Jerusalem, including the Old City, from Jordan during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, and later annexed the area. Israel later declared unified Jerusalem as its capital, although the move was not internationally recognized. An Islamic trust (known as the Waqf), funded and controlled by Jordan, operated the Aqsa Mosque and the Rock Dome in a 1994 peace deal with Israel. Israeli security forces maintain a presence on the site and they coordinate with the waqf. Jews and Christians are allowed to visit, but Muslims are forbidden to pray on the basis of the status quo. (Jews pray just below the sacred plateau on the west wall, the remnants of a wall that once surrounded the Temple Mount)).
